Crowns & Bridges Make Versatile Restorations

Dental crowns and dental bridges can be used in many different ways to help repair your damaged smile. If you have failing or missing teeth, there’s a good chance we’ll use crowns and bridges in your treatment plan.

Our crowns are fashioned out of tooth-colored material such as porcelain or zirconia. To make a bridge, two or more crowns are attached to replacement teeth in the middle. Bridges are a good replacement for removable partials.

When you come in for your initial exam, we’ll go over all your crowns and bridges options for getting your smile back in shape. They could include:

  • Single Crown For Tooth Repair – If you have a single tooth that’s damaged or diseased, we may recommend repairing it with a beautiful new crown. We’ll gently shape the tooth so that the crown fits neatly over the top. Then we’ll cement the custom-made crown into place to strengthen the tooth and help prevent further problems. Crowns are often used in this way after a tooth has been saved from extraction with root canal treatment.
  • Crown-Implant Combination – For a single missing tooth, there’s no better way to replace it than with a dental implant and a crown. Your dentist will place the implant where your tooth is missing, then after a healing period, we’ll attach the crown to the top of the implant. You’ll have a lifelike replacement tooth, and virtually all your biting and chewing power will be restored.
  • Standard Fixed Bridge – This type of bridge is designed to anchor on either end to your natural teeth. It will have one or more replacement teeth in the middle and will span the empty space left by missing teeth. Eating will be more comfortable, plus you’ll have a natural-looking restoration that you’ll be proud to show off.
  • Implant-Supported Bridge – This bridge is similar to a standard bridge except that it anchors to two or more dental implants rather than your natural teeth. Common Questions About Dental Crowns & Bridges

A crown is one of our most versatile dental restorations. Unlike a filling or a veneer, it covers your entire tooth. This reinforces and protects your tooth structure. We use crowns to address decay that is too extensive for a filling and to fix breaks and cracks. A crown is usually placed on a tooth after a root canal. When attached to a dental implant, a crown can also replace a missing tooth.

When you lose teeth, it creates a gap. A bridge is a restoration created by suspending one or more artificial teeth (called pontics) between two or more dental crowns. The crowns are attached to the teeth on either side of the gap in your smile. The pontics bridge the gap, so your smile looks as good as new.

The longevity of restorations depends on multiple factors, including the materials they are made of, where they are located in your mouth, and whether you take good care of your teeth. Typically though, they are quite durable. Most crowns and bridges will last at least a decade, and some last far longer than that.

Your individual cost for crowns and bridges can vary widely, depending on your needs and treatment plan. Placing a single crown is less expensive than filling in a smile gap with a bridge consisting of several replacement teeth. Post-Op Care For Crowns and Bridges

Please refrain from eating at least for 2 hours and until the anesthesia has worn off.

Temporary Crowns

Temporary crowns are not very strong. They may break or come off occasionally. If so, slip it back on the tooth with some FixodentTM (Denture Adhesive) and call us for an appointment. Please do not leave the temporary out of your mouth because the teeth will move and the final restoration will not fit. 3 weeks are needed for the Lab to process your new crown or bridge.

  • The size, shape, and color of the temporary does not resemble the final restoration
  • Temporary restorations may leak saliva or food onto the tooth. Sensitivity to hot, cold, pressure, or sweets is not uncommon.
  • If you feel the bite is not correctly balanced, please call for an appointment for a simple adjustment.

Permanent Crowns/Bridges

  • After the final cementation of your restoration, it may take a few days to get used to the new crown or bridge. Hot and cold sensitivity is possible for a few weeks and occasionally lasts for several months. As with the temporary, if the bite doesn’t feel balanced please call us.
  • Do not chew hard or sticky foods on the restoration for 24 hours from the time they were cemented. The cement must set up during this time to have optimum strength.
  • Proper brushing, flossing, and regular 6-month (minimal) cleanings are required to help you retain your final restoration. The only area that a crowned tooth can decay is at the edge of the crown at the gum line. Often, small problems that develop around the restorations can be found at an early stage and corrected easily, but waiting for a longer time may require redoing the entire restoration.
